JASPER — A slew of Orange County tracksters punched in their tickets to the Class 4A Region III Track & Field Championships with solid performances at the Area Meet held Wednesday at Jasper High School as athletes from 22-4A and 21-4A competed against one another.

The top four places in each event will compete in the Region III Championships Apr. 27-28 at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville.

Perhaps no one had a bigger day then Orangefield distance runner Maddison Helm. Helm dominated both the girls 3,200 and 1,600 meters, setting new personal marks in each one.

Helm cruised to the win in the 3,200 meters in 12:09.86 and captured the 1,600 meters in 5:23.90.

Helm’s male counterpart Little Cypress-Mauriceville’s Eli Peveto continues to dominate the boys’ field in both races as well.

Peveto won the 3,200 meters in 10:01.79 and the 1,600 meters in 4:37.09.

Other Orange County winners Wednesday included LC-M’s Christian Weatherly in the high jump (6-4) and Bridge City’s Max Baker in the long jump (21-8 ½).

On the girls’ side Orangefield had two more winners as Mackenzie Davis captured the pole vault (9-0) and Kinley Gipson won the Discus (115-4).

The Jasper boys won the team division with 103 total points while the Huntington girls captured the team crown with 117 points.
