Call the birthday man  When I was a boy, on one of the local radio stations in Lufkin in the morning before we went to school, there was a man named Hamp Keathley who had a radio program called Hamp ‘N’ Eggs.  He did the usual things radio announcers do, like announce the weather, events going on in the area, and other things, but one of the special things he offered on his program was announcing the birthdays of people in the area.

When I grew up, I liked to be sure my family members’ birthdays were remembered, so I would call in early in his program that day.  I was very close to both my grandmothers; Granny Hinson’s birthday (my maternal grandmother) was December 15th, and my father’s mother’s birthday (Blanche [Poskey] Dixon) was Valentine’s Day.  It was always neat to hear him announce it because he would paint you up so brown for calling it in.  Then, I would make sure they had heard it, too.  So, I got two ‘atta boys for taking the time to call the birthday man.
