A small apartment complex in Mauriceville was the center of attention early Monday morning after it caught fire. Orange County ESD 4 responded to a report of an apartment fire in the 8300 block of Highway 12 around 2:30 a.m. in Mauriceville.

Again on Monday morning at approximately 9:30 a.m. and again at 12:30 p.m., the structure was on fire again.

According to Orange County ESD 4 Chief Matt Manshack, the small fire displaced 18 residents.

“When units arrived we found the center of the complex to be fully involved with flames and heavy smoke coming from the building,” Manshack said.

All occupants were able to make it out of their apartment safety and only minor injuries were reported.

The owner of the complex stated that he had just finished remodeling the apartments from Hurricane Harvey Sunday and all residents were in the phase of moving back into their units.

Orange County ESD 4 was assisted by Orange County ESD1, 2, and 3, Newton County ESD 1, and Acadian Ambulance Service.

Highway 12 was closed down in both directions for about an hour while firefighters fought the blaze.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation at this time and the Red Cross is assisting the victims affected by the fire.
