LITTLE CYPRESS — There was no doubt that the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears returned a lot of talent this year on the softball field and it has definitely showed in the early going.

The Lady Bears, who advanced to the Class 4A Region III semifinals last season, recently went undefeated at their own Lady Bear Tournament and found a lot of success against bigger schools at the Sweeny Tournament this past weekend.

The Lady Bears notched wins over Boling (6-2), Rockport (4-2) and West Columbia (10-2) before dropping their first game of the season to Beeville (1-0).

LC-M has outscored opponents 49-10 thus far.

Renna Toomey has led the early LC-M hitting parade as she is batting .500 with two home runs and nine runs batted in and leads the team with eight runs scored.

Perhaps the biggest surprise thus far as been the hitting of freshman Bailey Frenzel. Frenzel is hitting at a .500 clip with two home runs and leads the way with 11 RBI.

Maddie Murdock (.353) and Ally White (.333) and Morgan Weaver (.250) have also swung the bats well early on while Jaycee Perry, Jonee Villanueva, Joanna Henry and Olivia Leavings have had solid moments as well.

Junior ace Bri Frenzel has been solid on the mound early on against stiff competition, sporting a 1.93 ERA with 44 strikeouts in 23 innings of work. Toomey has also tossed well, with a 1.64 ERA with 16 strikeouts in 11 innings of work.

The Lady Bears will compete in the Liberty Tournament this week.

LC-M will open up District 22-4A play Mar. 12 when they play host to Hamshire-Fannett.
