CHANNELVIEW — The West Orange-Stark Mustangs fought a powerful Houston Yates squad early in the first quarter but the mighty Lions simply wore out the Mustangs with their full-court pressure as they ran away with a 110-49 Class 4A Region III area round playoff victory at Channelview High School Thursday night.

The Mustangs (15-16) led early 14-12 but the Lions (24-2) gradually surged ahead and then ran away from WO-S.

The Lions finished the first quarter with a 12-3 spurt to lead 24-17.

Yates then found a hot hand from the field and their pressed stymied the Mustangs as the Lions went on a 31-11 tear in the second quarter to lead 55-28 at intermission.

The Lions continued to pour in the points as they outscored the Mustangs 31-11 in the third period.

Joquaris Valrie led the Lions with 21 points. Mitchell Seraille tallied 16 points for Yates while Jock Hughes and Rubin Jones added 16 points apiece.

Yates will now await the winner between LC-M and Hardin-Jefferson for a regional quarterfinal battle next week.
