Down for the Count One year while I was working on my Bachelors at Stephen F. Austine State University, I worked as an election clerk at the courthouse box in downtown Lufkin.  The election judge for that box was my father—a job he had done for many years.  My political science professors at SFASU would have been proud of me if they had known I was “getting my hands dirty” doing hands-on, in-the-trenches political work.

On March 6th, I will carry on my father’s tradition of serving as a voting precinct judge here in Lufkin, Texas.  Now things have progressed quite a lot technologically since those days I hand counted those ballots with Mrs. Pauline Slover, Robert Poland’s mother-in-law.  They put us down a hallway, just past the deed room of the county clerk’s office as I recall, and it was long and tedious.  Those workers would have marveled at the push a button technology and print it out technology we have today.  Nevertheless, from 7:00 a.m., when the polls opened, until 7:00 p.m., when the polls closed, all of us working with my Dad that day were down for the count.
