ORANGEFIELD — In a tale of two halves, the West Orange-Stark Mustangs were able to storm past the Orangefield Bobcats for a 48-37 District 22-4A victory at Bobcat Gum Tuesday night.

With a little more than five minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Mustangs looked like they were in a “world of hurt” as they trailed the Bobcats 27-11.

However, with the play of big man Terron Brown and a suffocating press, WO-S wore down the Bobcats in the last 13 minutes.

The Mustangs went on a 23-0 run to go up 34-27 and outscored the Bobcats 38-10 in the last 13 minutes to snag the victory.

The Mustangs moved to 13-13 overall but more importantly 6-2 in 22-4A play and are now tied with Little Cypress-Mauriceville for second.

Orangefield drops to 14-16 and 1-7 in 22-4A play but still has a slight chance for the playoffs if the Bobcats defeat Bridge City at home Friday and Hamshire-Fannett on the road next Tuesday. If they do that, it will likely force a fourth-place play-in game against the Cardinals, who travel to first-place Silsbee next Tuesday.

Brown dominated inside and out for the Mustangs as he collected a game-high 20 points, hit two three-pointers and finished with eight rebounds.

Brown scored 13 of his points after intermission and the full-court press by the Mustangs started to take it’s toll.

WO-S forced the Bobcats into 24 turnovers, 11 of them in the third quarter as the Mustangs went on a 16-4 tear to tie the game up by the end of the quarter.

The Mustangs capitalized on a few more Orangefield turnovers early in the fourth as the Bobcats struggled offensively in the last 16 minutes, making just five field goals.

Brown and teammate Devontra Ranton scored 13 of the 22 WO-S points in the fourth as the Mustangs gradually pulled away.

WO-S didn’t allow the Bobcats many second-chance opportunities as the Mustangs finished with a 35-20 rebounding advantage.

Ranton finished with nine points and eight rebounds. B’Jan Arvie had a game-high 11 boards for the Mustangs.

Guard Aven Lathrop led the Bobcat offense with 11 points. Point guard Zach Dischler had nine points and snared nine rebounds while Alex Catt contributed eight points.

The Bobcats led 14-8 at the end of the first quarter as five different players scored while Brown kept WO-S in it with both of his three-pointers on the night.

The Bobcats forced WO-S into six of its 17 turnovers in the second quarter and went on a 9-3 surge to lead 23-11 at intermission.

WO_S finished 14-of-23 from the free-throw line while the Bobcats were just 7-of-14.

Orangefield will host Bridge City Friday while the Mustangs visit defending 4A state champion Silsbee.
