To The Leader

Keith Allred, newsletter editor for the Angelina County Genealogical Society, will be honored Monday, January 29, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. for winning third place in the Texas State Genealogical Society’s 2017 Writing Awards Contest in the quarterly category.

Dickie Dixon, president of the Society, will present him with the certificate sent by the genealogical society at the state level.

The Angelina County Genealogical Society received the third place certificate and a $30 check for winning.  For many years, Allred has served as the editor of Echoes in the Pines, following the capable Ellen Pyle of Trinity County.  This year was the first year, he had produced a quarterly.

Allred brings to the table a wealth of experience in writing, teaching, journalism, English, newsletter, school newspaper and annual publication. With a degree in journalism form Stephen F. Austin State University, he began as a reporter for the Abilene newspaper, then the Orange Leader, and the Lufkin Daily News.

The Chronicle almost snatched him for their East Texas Bureau in Lufkin, but he went to the Lufkin Daily.  After his newspaper career, he taught English, Journalism, and Art at Broaddus High School; he also did the same for Central Consolidated outside Lufkin.

According to Dickie Dixon:  “We are lucky to have Keith Allred.  He is irreplaceable.”

The meeting will be held in the Community Meeting Room at Kurth Memorial Library on 702 South Raguet in Lufkin, Texas (75904).
