BAYTOWN — The two-time defending Class 4A Division II West Orange-Stark Mustangs dismantle the Brookshire-Royal Falcons in the bidistrict round of the 4A Region III playoffs 54-0 at Stallworth Stadium Thursday night in a total mismatch, improving their state-leading winning streak to 36 straight games and 13th straight playoff victory.

The Mustangs (9-0) never looked in danger of giving up any points all night as the defense did what they do best for them and that was putting the hammer down against a woeful Falcons team that finished the season with a 1-9 mark but still made the postseason.

The Mustangs will now move on to face either Mexia (5-5) or Gonzales (6-4) in the area round next week.

As the temperature drops and it changes to the fall, the Mustangs entered Thursday night’s game wanting to prove the state of Texas right in assuming they should be in another championship game for the fourth straight time this winter.

The Falcons were only able to gain a total of one yard for the entirety of the first half, the Mustangs had 164 yards total in the same half of football. One can picture how this game went for the Mustangs and how little the Falcons were able to do.

The Mustangs finished with 245 yards of total offense while limiting the Falcons to just 27 as a running clock was enforced in the second half after the Mustangs led 48-0 at intermission.

Royal could only muster 20 yards on 24 carries with their ground game as the ‘Chain Gang Defense” was simply overwhelming.

The Mustangs started the game off early with running back Justin Sibley’s nine-yard touchdown run. It was set up by fellow Kayven Cooper and the pass game from quarterback Chaka Watson, who found Jaylon Mims for a 14 yard pass. On the first series. The Mustangs only took a couple minutes off the clock on the drive to go up 7-0 after kicker Chad Dallas nailed the extra-point. Watson finished 2-for-4 on the night for 48 yards.

After WO-S’ Tyshon Watkins blocked a punt inside the Royal 5, the Mustangs quickly punched another score in. Cooper dashed into the end zone from four yards out to put the Mustangs up 13-0 with 7:30 left in the first quarter. Cooper collected 43 yards on seven totes on the night.

The Mustangs kept the offense going with another touchdown from Cooper. This one came after a couple of long runs by Cooper to set himself up with a one-yard run across the goal line as the Mustangs built a 20-0 edge with 2:35 still in the first quarter.

The Mustangs continued their onslaught in the second quarter with an opening touchdown to start it off. Sibley capped off a short drive with a 39-yard touchdown jaunt to push the advantage to 27-0 with 11:40 left in the half. Sibley finished with 48 yards on two carries.

Tyshon Watkins for the Mustangs comes up with a second blocked punt of the game, but took the second one into the end zone from 28 yards as the blowout was on at 34-0 with 9:20 in the half..

Watson would find receiver Deiondr’e Hawthorne for a long 37-yard pass for another touchdown with 5:08 in the half to push it to 41-0.

The Mustangs Ja’Vonn Ross got into the scoring act as he returned a 41-yard punt for a touchdown to make the lead even bigger at 48-0 with 2:35 still in the half. Ross actually led the Mustangs in rushing with two carries for 55 yards.

The referees had the clock running in the second half, but the Mustangs continued to score, going over the 50 -point mark with the next touchdown as backup running back Dashawn Holt ran one in from 25 yards out to make the score 54-0 at the end of the third quarter.

The Mustangs had this game closed up quickly and pretty much stayed injury-free as they look to continue their postseason success next week.
