LC-M’s Peveto nabs 4A Region III CC title; OF’s Helm nab state berth too

HUNTSVILLE — Little Cypress-Mauriceville’s Eli Peveto punched in his Class 4A State Cross Country ticket by cruising past the competition to capture the 4A Region III title Monday afternoon at Huntsville’s Kate-Barr-Ross Park.

Peveto covered the 5K terrain in 16 minutes, 42.5 seconds to easily outdistance Palestine’s Luis Rangel, who was second with a time of 17:13.1.

Orangefield’s Maddison Helm will join Peveto at the State Meet as she finished a superb sixth in the girls 4A two-mile race, running a 12:31.1. Huffman’s Kaytlyn took first-place with a sizzling time of 12:13.2.

The LC-M boys team finished ninth overall in the 22-team field that featured 168 runners.

Following Peveto were teammates Rayce Piper (31st, 18:26.1), Jackson Baeza (53rd, 18:57.5), Trevor Turner (60th, 19:09.0), Cameron Smith (145th, 22:15.2), Matthew Erb (150th, 22:52.3) and Blake Marshall (153rd, 23:02.01).

The Bridge City Cardinals finished 17th. Ruben Valencia paced the Cardinals, placing 63rd with a 19:17.3. He was followed by teammates Kyler Young (107th, 20:36.7), Caden Shaw (114th, 20:46.4), Nathan Rhodes (117th, 20:49.4) and Alex Miller (130th, 21:44.5).

West Orange-Stark’s Dominque Preston was 102nd with a time of 20:31.3.

The Bridge City Lady Cardinals were 16th in a 24-team girls field that featured 177 runners.

Kaylen Smith paced the Lady Cardinals, finishing 21st with a 13:21.5. She was followed by teammates Kyler Meyer (81st, 14:42.9), Destiny Block (122nd, 15:52.2), Katy Torbett (126th, 15:58.2), Brooklin Sheffield (132nd, 16:12.4), and Riley Thomason (137th, 16:19.5.

Llano won the girls team title while Palestine took the boys crown.
