LC-M’s Peveto, Orangefield’s Helm rack up high finishes at Liberty CC event

LIBERTY — There were plenty of fast times at the Liberty Cross Country Invitational Saturday as a slew of teams gathered for one of the biggest meets of the year.

Little Cypress-Mauriceville’s Eli Peveto continues to up the ante as the standout distant runner ran a sizzling 5,000 meters in 15:45.1. That sets a new personal best for Peveto in that distance.

Peveto placed second, barely getting nipped by Klein’s Peter Meyers, who ran a 15:44.

The LC-M CC team competed up a division as the varsity ran in the Class 5A/6A Division and placed a solid fifth overall out of 14 teams.

Jackson Baeza ran a 17:45.3 to place 23rd for the Bears as he and Peveto were followed by teammates Rayce Piper (37th, 18:12.4), Trevor Turner (55th, 18:50.2) and Cameron Smith (81st, 20:11.4).

The Bridge City boys finished a solid fourth in the 10-team Class 4A and under field.

Kyler Young paced the Cardinals, placing 18th with a 19:17.8. He was followed by teammates Ruben Valencia (19th, 19:19.5), Nathan Rhodes (24th, 19:47.6), Adrian Draughn (25th, 19:53), Caden Shaw (29th, 20:07.7) and Alex Miller (38th, 20:38.7.).

Kaleb Istre led West Orange-Stark, finishing 23rd with a 19:38 followed by teammates Dominque Preston (43rd, 21:10.1), Trevor Henson (63rd, 22:19.6), Aundre Samuel (69th, 22:58.2), Damien Apadoca (70th, 22:59), Albert Davis (71st, 23:01.4) and Darryl Bowens (82nd, 25:50.5).

Seth Carpenter led LC-M in this division, placing 35th with a 20:24.6 followed by teammates Stephan Kusek (46th, 21:11.9), Chase Fisher (48th, 21:14.6) and Matthew Erb (65th, 22:34.6).

Dylan Wells led Orangefield, finishing 36th with a 20:31.6 followed by teammates Deigo Baca (37th, 20:33), Jacob Guillot (44th, 21:10.5) and Brandon Scogin (45th, 21:10.5).

In the Girls Class 4A-and-Under two-mile race, Orangefield’s Maddison Helm continued her solid path this season by placing second with a sizzling time of 12:47.1. She placed second behind Huffman’s Kaytlyn Kuta, who ran a 12:05.4.

Huffman won the team title. The Bridge City girls snagged fourth overall while LC-M placed eighth.

Kaylen Smith paced Bridge City, earning 10th with a 13:26.7. She was followed by teasmmates Brooklyn Sheffield (24th, 14:11.7), Kyler Meyers (28th, 14:30.6), Katy Torbett (39th, 15:04.8), Destiny Block (50th, 15:23) and Riley Thomason (56th, 15:35.4).

Robyn Cormier led LC-M, finishing 29th with a 14:33.7. She was followed by teammates Kierra Figgins (33rd, 14:47.5), Olivia Keltz (63rd, 15:48.2), Alana Craig (67th, 16:09.1), MaKenzie Holland (70th, 16:19.8) and Alora Jones (73rd, 16:44.9).

Orangefield’s Victoria Welch earned 49th with a 15:21.6.
