Mustangs make quick work of KIPP Gators

WEST ORANGE — The West Orange-Stark Mustangs took down the KIPP Northeast Gators 61-6 in a one-sided affair at Hooks Stadium Friday night to improve to 2-0 on the season.

The Mustangs took care of business early in this game going up 49-6 at the half. The offense didn’t look perfect, neither did their defense, but the pure talent from West Orange-Stark showed through with long breakout runs from multiple running backs.

The Mustangs get on the board quickly on the first drive. With just five plays the Mustangs drove 58 yards. Kavyn Cooper broke it open on the first play for a long 30-yard run. Jarron Morris followed it up with a 23-yard run to set up first and goal. Chaka Watson would punch it in from a yard out as the Mustangs took an early lead, 7-0 with 9:56 in the first quarter.

The went on a 53-yard drive for their next score. Cooper accounted for 40 of the yards on the march with two rushes. Watson completes his first pass of the game for 10 yards to Kaleb Ramsey. That pass set up a 28-yard scamper by Cooper. After the Chad Dallas PAT the Mustangs go up 14-0 with about two minutes in the first quarter.

On the next drive the Mustang defense forced a fumble out of the KIPP quarterback and got the ball at the Gator 25. Watson would find Demorris Thibodeaux for an easy eight-yard pass to top off the drive. It only took the Mustangs two plays as they went up 21-0 with 2:05 in the first.

The Mustangs pinned the Gators way back on their own 5. On third down, after two plays gained zero yards, the Mustang defense sacked Desmond Houston for a safety making it 23-0.

The very next kickoff, Jarron Morris took it to the house with a 61-yard kickoff return touchdown as the Mustangs grabbed a 29-0 cushion.

Cooper continued to put points on the board with another rushing touchdown in the first half. He would run for 45 yards on the drive and scored on a 25-yard run to the right to make it 35-0.

The KIPP Northeast Gators would find the end zone for the first time with about eight minutes left in the first half. Desmond Houston would find Devoyne Provo for a long 81-yard pass. The Gators would go for a 2-point conversion but fell short.

The Mustangs would continue the solid first half with another touchdown with five minutes left in the first half. Justin Sibley ripped for 34 yards on the march drive and Ja’vonn Ross broke a long 28-yard run. Watson would pass to Mark Thibodeaux for a 12-yard touchdown pass.

With a minute and a half till half time, the Mustangs would put up another scoring drive. Watson completed a long 34-yard pass to Blake Robinson. That pass setup a Sibley 36-yard touchdown run.

The Mustangs would score again but this time with Tyrone Wilson under center. Wilson completed two passes on the drive and Sibley would finish the drive off with 13 yards and a

West Orange-Stark would score another touchdown using a new running back. Kedrick Harris topped off the drive for the Mustangs after KIPP gave up a couple of long penalties

The Mustangs will look to use the momentum from this massive win going into next week against the Silsbee Tigers in Silsbee.
