WEST ORANGE — After finally getting to hit the field last week with a decisive 39-6 victory over the Bridge City Cardinals, the two-time defending Class 4A Division II state champion West Orange-Stark Mustangs are turning their attention to the KIPP Northeast Gators this week in non-district action at Hooks Stadium.
The KIPP Gators (1-0) came to West Orange last season and the Mustangs (1-0) rolled to a convincing 61-0 shutout victory.
The Mustangs will look to extend their winning streak to 29 games.
“We were happy to get that first game under our belts last week and now it’s time to improve and work on a lot of things,” said Mustang coach Cornel Thompson. “We’ve got three games left to get ready for district play. KIPP, followed by Silsbee and Kennedale, we’ll find out where we’re at.”
KIPP has gotten in one game as well as they rolled past Galveston O’Connell 56-0 last week.
“They have almost their entire team returning,” said Thompson. “They have about 25 players or so. We saw them a little bit on film. They had a big scrimmage with about five other of those KIPP schools. They have some skill people now.”
The Mustangs had a solid all-around game against the Cardinals last week.
The Mustangs piled up 333 total yards against the Bridge City defense. They gobbled up 231 yards on the ground on 30 carries.
Tailback Kavyn Cooper poured out 114 yards on just nine carries. Quarterback Chaka Watson had a solid debut as the starter.
Watson completed 9-of-14 passes for 92 yards and a score and rushed for 63 yards and a pair of scores on seven carries.
The Mustang defense showed little rust.
They limited the Cardinals to just 102 total yards. Bridge City’s usually vaunted rushing arsenal was held to just 63 yards on 33 carries and WO-S held them to just five first downs. The win pushed the Mustangs to a 26-0 all-time record against the Cardinals.
