Some high school football games in Southeast Texas will now be played in the middle of the week to allow teams to acclimate from Tropical Storm Harvey.

The District 22-5A executive committee voted Friday in Lumberton on a compressed schedule to allow Vidor and other schools more time to prepare after missing games due to Harvey. The storm has left many athletes in the district displaced and caused teams like Vidor to not be able to practice fully or play a game.

In the process, Port Arthur Memorial coach Kenny Harrison said he switched an off-date with Vidor to give the Pirates time to prepare. Vidor will not play until Wednesday, Sept. 27, when it hosts Beaumont Central, a game originally scheduled for Sept. 15.

Vidor’s game against Pasadena Memorial on Friday was canceled.

“To not finish a practice and not get to play a game [by Sept. 15], that’s just unfair to Vidor,” Harrison said.

While some schools will resume classes in the coming week, eight of the nine 22-5A teams will play Sept. 20. Beaumont schools Central, Ozen and West Brook had their Week 2 games canceled as well, but those were non-district (Central at Katy Tompkins and West Brook vs. Ozen). Ozen would have played at Baytown Lee on Sept. 15, but that is pushed back five days.

Memorial begins classes Sept. 18, two days before visiting Central, but is scrimmaging at Channelview this morning.
