A fire at Beckett and Beckett on Friday caught the attention of several residents as the dark billowing clouds filled the air.

According to City of Orange Fire Marshal John Bilbo, the owner of Beckett and Beckett Inc., located at 1740 State Hwy. 87 in Orange, received a call around 6:15 p.m. Friday evening concerning a barrel of synthetic rubber was on fire.

Firefighters from Orange Fire Department immediately responded to the scene and found the barrels fully involved and heavy smoke coming from the yard.

“A nearby 18-wheeler trailer was parked next to the barrels and the heat from the flames spread to the trailer causing it to catch fire,” Bilbo said.

Heavy black smoke could be seen for several miles from the fire, firefighters from West Orange, Bridge City, and Acadian Ambulance assisted with the blaze.

Citizens at the Orangefield scrimmage game were able to see the clouds of black smoke.

No injuries were reported and the fire remains under investigation.
