PORT NECHES -Roschon Johnson tweeted one word to indicate his football future: “Committed.”
That, along with a “Hook ’em Horns” hand sign and an ox.
With that, the Port Neches-Groves junior quarterback announced his verbal commitment to the University of Texas on Friday night.
The announcement highlights an intense recruiting battle for Johnson, who is coming off a standout sophomore season leading the Indians to a share of the District 22-5A championship. Fifteen programs, 14 of them from Power Five schools and the other being Lamar, have offered Johnson, a four-star athlete according to 247sports.com who’s listed as 6-feet-5 and 192 pounds. He’s ranked third among dual quarterbacks nationally and 20th in the state.
Johnson neared 4,000 total offensive yards as a sophomore. He threw for 2,364 yards and rushed for 1,488. In the process, he turned in a string of three straight 200-yard rushing games. District 22-5A named Johnson its MVP.
Johnson is the fourth quarterback to commit officially or verbally to the Longhorns since Tom Herman took over as head coach in December, according to 247sports.com. Sam Ehlinger of Austin Westlake will be a freshman this season, while Casey Thompson of Moore (Oklahoma) Southmoore and Cameron Rising of Newbury Park (California) are committed from the class of 2018.
