Special to The Leader

The Jefferson County Bar Association (JCBA) will hold a FREE Elder Law Seminar for area veterans on Friday, July 14, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. at the Beaumont VA Outpatient Clinic located at 3420 Veterans Circle, Beaumont, TX.  Appointments are strongly encouraged by calling the bar office at (409)835-8647.

The seminar will begin at noon with a 30-minute Elder Law presentation.  At the conclusion of the 30-minute presentation, veterans will be given an opportunity for brief advice and counsel related to elder law, i.e. wills/estate planning, guardianship, power of attorney, planning for incapacity, etc.  For veterans needing continued legal representation and who financially qualify, pro bono attorneys will be assigned.  Financial guidelines do apply for additional free legal representation; the guidelines allow for veterans to have income up to 200% above the federal poverty level and qualify for services.  The seminar is open to any Jefferson, Hardin, Orange, Liberty or Chambers County veteran or spouse of a deceased veteran FREE of charge.

The JCBA’s legal advice clinic is part of the statewide Texas Lawyers for Texas Veterans (TLTV) initiative, a program begun by the State Bar of Texas and funded by The Texas Access to Justice Foundation (TAJF) to ensure that organized legal clinics exist throughout the state to specifically assist military veterans who cannot afford or do not have access to basic legal services.  TAJF is the leading funder of civil legal aid to the poor in Texas.  Created in 1984 by the Supreme Court of Texas, TAJF awards millions of dollars per year that benefits hundreds of thousands of low-income Texans annually including victims of crime, abused and neglected children, veterans, the elderly and the homeless.
