Mustangs make quick work of Hamshire-Fannett

WEST ORANGE — The West Orange-Stark Mustangs had no problems in their District 22-4A opener Friday night at Mustang Gym as they topped the Hamshire-Fannett Longhorns

The Mustangs (6-9, 1-0) Cory Skinner led the team with 22 points in the game, having his way with the Longhorns (4-11, 0-1) defense.

Tarek Riley showed up late to seal the game with 14 points off the bench, all the points coming in the paint and forcing fouls.

WO-S came out of the gates slow, having a problem with turnovers with four in the first quarter. Skinner kept the Mustangs in the game with five points early, having the most through the first half for the team.

The Longhorns’ Devren Clark got going late into the quarter putting up six, both being from behind the three-point line, making the only two shots he took that quarter.

The Mustangs would end the first quarter up 18-11 looking for a way to get the offense going.

Skinner started the quarter off hot putting up nine total, with one from long range. Jalen Powdrill would also get his first points of the contest with five in the second quarter, three coming from the free-throw line as he continued to drive the rim looking for the tough points.

Hamshire-Fannett was not too far behind with the help of Clark putting up 11, adding two more three-point shots and three free-throws.

The Mustangs would only be up 10 with the score 40-30.

WO-S entered the third quarter looking to put the game away. The Mustangs went on a 17-6 run in the last four minutes of the quarter to all but seal up the . Tarek Riley went 4-for-4 on free throws and added four points in the paint during the big spurt.

The Mustangs would go on to finish off the game in a blowout fashion, shutting down the Longhorns on the defensive side as H-F went scoreless in the last eight minutes.

The Mustangs will return to action Tuesday when they play host to Bridge City.
