Weather update 8.17.16

Published 2:57 pm Wednesday, August 17, 2016

The National Weather Service in Lake Charles is forecasting another afternoon and evening of scattered showers and thunderstorms today. This activity should weaken by midnight. The heaviest rains could produce as much as 1 to 3 inches of rain in localized areas. If this falls in areas that saw the heavy rains last weekend, a flash flood warning will be issued due to poor drainage conditions during the rain.

The coverage of showers and thunderstorms should decrease as we head towards the weekend. It hinges an a mid to upper level trough sitting over Texas to lift north and move east. Forecast confidence is low on the timing of when this will occur.
Major flooding continues on Bayou des Cannes and the Vermilion and Mermentau Rivers. The Whiskey Chitto and Calcasieu River will see minor to major flooding through the weekend.
The tropical depression that has formed in the Atlantic is expected to become Tropical Storm Fiona later today or tomorrow. The forecast track keeps it in the Atlantic, and will pose no risk to the Gulf of Mexico.
