Orange County playoff football records

Published 1:55 pm Thursday, June 30, 2016

Orange County has had its share of success in the football playoffs, including four state titles, three by West Orange-Stark (1986, 1987, 2015) and one by Bridge City (1966).

WO-S has the current longest playoff streak, making it 12 straight years.

Mustang coach Cornel Thompson has led the Mustangs to five straight Region III Finals and back-to-back trips to the Class 4A Division II State Championship Game, including bringing home a state crown with a 22-3 victory over Celina last season.

The Orangefield Bobcats ended a 10-year playoff drought in 2013 and have captured back-to-back bidistrict playoff round victories the last two years under coach Josh Smalley.

The Bridge City Cardinals ended a two-year playoff drought last season under the direction of coach Dewayne DuBois as they look to continue towards another magical season.

Little Cypress-Mauriceville made the playoffs in 2013 and 2014 after a 16-year drought that dated back to 1997. The Bears barely missed out on the postseason last year and will be seeking their first playoff victory in 19 years.

The Vidor Pirates will be looking to end a three-year drought as coach Jeff Mathews will look to lead the Pirates into a rugged Class 5A district.

How many will make the postseason in 2016?

Droughts should not last as long anymore with four teams now making the postseason out of each district and a bunch of schools now compete in five and six-team districts across the state.

Here is a look at the playoff history for the Orange County schools:
