LITTLE CYPRESS — Digging themselves a 5-0 by the middle of the fifth inning, the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears basically said “No Problem, We Got This.”

The Bears went on to score seven runs in the bottom of the fifth frame as they went on to hold off the Huffman Falcons, the state’s ninth-ranked Class 4A team, 9-7 in Class 4A Region III bidistrict playoff action at Gibbens Field Saturday afternoon.

The Bears, the fourth-place team out of District 24-4A, had just one hit entering their explosive fifth frame, then everything got rolling.

Peyton Choate help start the big rally when he drew a leadoff walk. Truman Franklin promptly smashed a double of the centerfield wall and Seth Dronett drew a walk to load up the bases.

Vinny Hale hit a short roller to the mound and a bad throw to home plate enabled Choate to score the Bears’ first run and Franklin was also able to dart home after another throwing error.

Mitchell Lee certainly made the Falcons pay for their miscues as he crushed a pitch over the left centerfield fence to tie the game up at 5-5.

Michael Lee followed with a single to left and Grant White placed a double that bounced off the rightfield fence. Tyler McCorvy put the Bears ahead with a shallow single to left to bring home two runs.

LC-M tacked on a pair of big runs in the bottom of the sixth that they would eventually need.

Dronett ripped a leadoff double to right center. Drake Trawhon then put down a beautiful bunt and a wild throwing error to first allowed Dronett to race home. Trawhon would eventually score after a Michael Lee double down the leftfield line.

Huffman, District 23-4A champions, scored a run apiece in the first and second innings, two more in the fourth and one in the fifth and two in the top of the seventh.

Slade Green got the win in relief for the Bears, with three strong late innings.

The Bears will move on to face Caldwell in the area round this week.
