Lady Cardinals cruise past Lady Bears

LITTLE CYPRESS — The Bridge City Lady Cardinals, without question, are off to a high-flying start as they look to defend their District 24-4A softball title.

The Lady Cardinals plucked a big road win Wednesday night as they went to Little Cypress-Mauriceville and picked up a decisive 8-1 victory to improve to a perfect 4-0 in district play.

The Lady Cardinals (20-2, 4-0) scored six of their runs on seven hits in the third inning to get past the Lady Bears (10-10, 3-1).

Kassidy Wilbur got the win on the hill for the Lady Cardinals as she went four innings, allowing one hit while striking out nine and walking two.

Wilbur was stout at the plate as well, going 3-for-4 with a home run, a triple and a double and two runs bated in.

Meagan Sourdellia was 3-for-4, drove in a run and scored. Baili Thibodaux was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a triple.

The Lady Cardinals struck for a run in the top of the first inning.

Hannah Carpenter reached on a error, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Wilbur triple to right centerfield off LC-M starter Breanna Frenzel.

The floodgate opened up in the top of the third for the Lady Cardinals.

Thibodaux had a leadoff triple to center and scored on a Carpenter RBI double down the third base line. Wilbur followed with a double down the same third base line.

Caitlin Denison promptly stroked a single to shallow left to plate Carpenter and Wilbur was able to score on a throwing error to make it 4-0.

Sourdellia slapped a single to left to bring home Denison.

With two outs, Abby Anderson lined a RBI infield single to score Sourdellia and Thibodaux brought in the inning’s final tally with a RBI single to make it 7-0.

The Lady Cardinals went up 8-0 in the top of the seventh inning as Wilbur sent a pitch by Lady Bear reliever Renna Toomey over the centerfield fence for a solo home run.

The Lady Bears scratched in a run in the bottom of the seventh frame.

Jonae Villanueva ripped a one-out double to centerfield and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Morgan Weaver.

Peyton Trapp pitched three innings of relief for the Lady Cardinals, allowing just one hit.

Bridge City finished with 11 hits. Frenzel pitched the first 2 2/3 innings for LC-M, allowing nine hits. Toomey went the final 4 1/3 innings, allowing two hits while striking out one and walking one.

LC-M’s Ashley Short ripped a one-out double in the third inning.
