Lady Mustangs stun Lady Bobcats

ORANGEFIELD — Putting together perhaps their best game of the season Tuesday night, the West Orange-Stark lady Mustangs went on the road and stunned the playoff-bound Orangefield Lady Bobcats 56-49 in District 24-4A action at Bobcat Gym.

The Lady Mustangs controlled the game after going on a 18-5 run in the second quarter. The Lady Bobcats made several surges but WO-S was able to hang on for the big win.

It was totally different game when the two teams battled at WO-S in the first half of 24-4A play as Orangefield rolled to a 51-26 win.

The Lady Mustangs, who, placed four players in double figures, had 34 points in the first half Tuesday night.

The Lady Bobcats (7-4 in 24-4A play) or now a half game back of second-place Hardin-Jefferson (7-3) while the Lady Mustangs improved to 3-7 in district play.

Balanced scoring was definitely a big plus for the Lady Mustangs.

WO-S trailed Orangefield 18-16 after the first quarter as Lady Bobcat post Sabryn Crain tallied seven of her points in the period. Crain finished with a big double-double, scoring 21 points while snagging 15 rebounds.

Betty McDonald, who led the Lady Mustangs with 14 points, all coming in the first half, poured in eight points in the second quarter to power a big WO-S surge. Nakaiyah Platt and Eriel Jordan also led the second quarter spark with four points apiece.

Platt finished with 12 points and eight rebounds while Jordan had 12 points and seven boards. Daisha Broussard was consistent all night for WO-S as she racked up a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

The Lady Mustangs led by as much as 37-23 with 6:52 left in the third quarter. The Lady Bobcats, however, got to within four points twice but a big bucket by Platt gave WO-S a 46-39 edge heading to the final quarter.

The Lady Bobcats trimmed it to 48-43 after a bucket by Hanna Lowe but the Lady Mustangs were able to hold their composure as Broussard canned two big buckets and Jordan had one down the stretch to help seal it.

Bethnay Green tallied 11 points and snared nine boards for the Lady Bobcats. Lowe had eight points and four rebounds while Emmi Lummus finished with six points and six rebounds.

WO-S finished with a 43-36 rebounding edge as McDonald added five boards.

The Lady Mustangs had 21 turnovers while the Lady Bobcats had just 13.

Both teams were horrendous from the free-throw line. Orangefield was just 10-of-26 from the charity stripe while WO-S was a woeful 6-of-17.

The Lady Mustangs will play host to Hamshire-Fannett Friday. The Lady Bobcats have a bye Friday and will visit Hamshire-Fannett next Tuesday.
