From staff reports

Residential garbage pickup for residents in Pinehurst will be scheduled once per week each Tuesday beginning January 5, 2016. To ensure pickup each Tuesday residents should have their trash receptacles positioned for curbside pickup by 7:00 A.M. Household garbage pickup is currently done twice per week. That schedule of twice per week pickup will continue until the week of January 5.

Delivery of new trash receptacles to residents of Pinehurst will begin December 14, 2015. Residents will begin using the new receptacles to dispose of solid household waste January 5 when the new schedule is implemented. The new trash containers are 96-gallon Polycart receptacles. Each container is equipped with wheels to allow easy maneuvering to curbside and back. The containers are also designed and equipped for mechanical pickup by a truck driver using a robotic system to pickup and empty the container from the truck cab.

Heavy trash and bulk items will be collected at curbside on Tuesday also beginning January 5. White goods such as appliances and furniture fall into the category of heavy trash and bulk items. Generally these are items too large to fit in the normal solid waste receptacle. Residents are limited to two items for this class of solid waste disposal.

The city has contracted with Republic Waste Services to handle garbage and solid waste disposal. According to City Administrator Robbie Hood these changes are beneficial. Reducing the frequency heavy vehicles travel city streets will reduce wear and tear of that infrastructure. This will reduce the expense of repairs and maintenance of city streets.
