AUSTIN – Commissioner of Insurance David Mattax has appointed Deborah King to the Board of Directors of the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (TWIA).

King of Highland Village is vice president and chief actuary at Republic Underwriters Insurance Company. She has 25 years of experience as an actuary, much of it pricing property in areas prone to catastrophe.  She has degrees from the University of Southern California and Cal State University.

Under Senate Bill 900, the board must include three members who live in coastal counties, three members who live at least 100 miles from the coast, and three insurance industry representatives who write and renew windstorm and hail insurance along the Gulf Coast. King replaces the late Ronald Lawson, who also worked at Republic.

The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) is a consumer protection agency that regulates the world’s 10th largest insurance marketplace. In 2014, TDI received more than 563,000 calls from consumers, helped recover $32.3 million in claims and premiums, and prosecuted fraud cases to recover $221,000 in fines and restitution.
