Special to The Leader
Leaf and Petal Garden Club presented a $ 500 donation to the Field of Plenty recently.
The Field of Plenty is a donation community garden that is being developed to provide fresh fruit and vegetables for the food insecure in Orange County. Orange Christian Services has expanded their food program to include a donation community garden under their 501c3 status. The Charles Zeto family donated the 1.97 acres located directly behind Orange Christian Services this past March to OCS. The OCS Board approved acceptance of the land and dedicated its use to the development of a garden to be patterned after The Giving Field in Beaumont.
A small team of volunteers with a passion for gardening is working to make The Field of Plenty a reality. With the coming of spring, this small group will be looking for more enthusiastic garden volunteers who would like to help expand the garden. The garden plans are to include twenty raised beds, row crops, an orchard, and eventually an outdoor kitchen, so that gardening and cooking classes can be held for the public. Currently, the land is being leveled and planted with fall garden vegetables as we await our spring kickoff.
A volunteer training will be held in January at Orange Christian Services. Please call 409-886-0938 to pre-register for the training. All registrants will be contacted with the scheduled volunteer training date in January.
