Four OC runners make it to State CC Championships

HUNTSVILLE — Four Orange County cross country standouts will advance to the Class 4A State Cross Country Championships after strong finishes at the 4A Region III Cross Country Championships Monday at Huntsville’s Kate-Barr Ross Park.

Little Cypress-Mauriceville freshman Eli Peveto finished 13th overall and had the top time of all ninth graders competing as he ran a time of 19 minutes, 21 seconds.

He will be joined by Bridge City’s Isaiah Maldanado, who took 23rd with a 19:45.

The Cardinal boys team barely missed out in going to State as a team, finishing fifth overall as the top four teams advance. The LC-M boys placed ninth overall.

Other finishers for Bridge City included Ruben Valencia (25th, 19:50.10), Kyler Morse (26th, 19:51.40), Graydon Glover (30th, 20:06.30), Nolan Moore (64th, 21:25.00), Kolin Smith (82nd, 21:53.70), and Edward Doan (90th, 22:19.50).

For LC-M, Rayce Piper was 29th with a 20:03.00 followed by Blake Kresser (47th, 20:49.10), Jackson Baeze (52nd, 21:00.30), Cameron Blanchard (104th, 22:51.80), Jason Copley (138th, 24:25.60) and Brad Couture (140th, 24:58.30).

Orangefield’s Matthew Rainey was 98th with a 22:33.80.

The Bridge City Lady Cardinals will have two go to State. Freshman Caitlin Denison took 12th overall with a time of 14:30 while teammate Brittany Fonville was a solid 21st, running a 14:54.

The Bridge City girls placed eighth overall as a team while LC-M was 21st.

Other times for the Lady Cardinals included Katy Torbett (71st, 16:32.00), Mackenzie Murdock (74th, 16:35.30), Izzy Brooks (81st, 16:43.50), Hannah Huff (117th, 17:53.60), and Riley Dugas (125th, 18:15.50).

Olivia Keltz led LC-M, finishing 55th with a 16:09.80. She was followed by Kilon Gillis (101st, 17:23.80), Rylee Locke (120th, 17:58.50), Megan McKinley (141st, 19:03.30), and Alora Jones (151st, 20:30.00).

Lufkin Hudson’s Christina Hernandez took the girls individual title, running a 13:35.40. Hamshire-Fannett’s Camille Harris was second with a 13:46.50.

The Huffman girls won the team title. Hamshire-Fannett will go to State as a team after finishing fourth overall.

Robinson’s Michael Fuentes took the boys race in 18:02.10 and Robinson also cruised to the team title.

In Class 5A, the Nederland boys placed 15th overall as a team while Beaumont Central was 21st.

In Class 5A girls, Nederland placed 20th overall as a team and Lumberton was 21st.

The Class 4A State Cross Country Championships will be held in Round Rock Nov. 7.
