PRESS RELEASE —

LAKE CHARLES — On Sunday, October 11, 2015 at 1:07 a.m. Lake Charles Police received an “open phone” 911 call coming from 737 Contour Drive whereby they were able to hear a disturbance in the background.

Officers were dispatched to the residence and met by Venus Lau, the suspect’s wife. Officers were speaking with Venus in the front yard when her husband (suspect) Kevin Lau, Asian/male, date of birth: 08-07-1971 was observed standing in the doorway with a pistol. Officers and Venus backed away from the residence to a point of safety when they heard a gunshot come from the home. Almost immediately after setting a perimeter, Lau exited the residence, pointed his pistol in the direction of the officers and refused to obey their directions to drop his weapon. Still pointing his gun at officers, officers shot Lau. Officers then began First-Aid. Lau was transported to Lake Charles Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Lake Charles Police Chief Donald Dixon contacted the Louisiana State Police and requested that they conduct the investigation.

Information is subject to change as the investigation is still unfolding.
