VIDOR — Looking to get their stout ground game churning, the Vidor Pirates will be seeking their first District 22-5A win Friday night when they host the winless Baytown Lee Ganders.
The Pirates (1-3, 0-1) battled four-time defending 22-5A champion Nederland down to the wire last week only to fall 36-30 on the road.
The Pirates piled up 482 total yards in the loss, 438 of it via the ground. However, the Vidor defense allowed 470 yards, 290 of it via Nederland’s air attack.
Vidor had three players go over the 100-yard mark against Nederland.
Quarterback Kolby Humble had his best outing yet toting the leather as he zipped for 134 yards on just 10 carries against the Bulldogs.
Tailback Haylon Leckelt had 130 yards on 16 carries and now has 546 yards for the season. Fullback Blake Rowe bulled his way to 109 yards on 14 carries and has now zipped for 438 yards for the year.
Lee (0-4, 0-1) was in some tight non-district affairs before dropping each one of them. They have fallen to Baytown Sterling (27-21), Santa Fe (28-27) and Waller (48-37).
Their 22-5A opener last week was a struggle however. The Ganders got blown out at home by Port Neches-Groves 45-10.
The Pirate defense will certainly be concentrating on Gander quarterback Javarius Irving. Irving has completed 55-of-96 passes for 571 yards with six touchdowns. He has also rushed for 350 yards on 37 carries.
Running back Zavier Wright has 224 yards on 45 carries. Victor Clarke is the top receiver with his 16 catches for 279 yards and six TDs.
The Pirates went on the road last year and beat Lee 27-14 as they piled up 348 yards and limited the Ganders to 186.
The Pirates will also be at home next week when they entertain Beaumont Ozen.
