It’s all in the sauce

The Orange Leader

ORANGE — An old television commercial for spaghetti shows a mom cooking the sauce. As the aroma fills the house her son asks, “Hey, Mom, where are the mushrooms?” “They’re already in the sauce,” she says. “What about the sausage?” “It’s in there, too.” “And what about the tomatoes?” Once again the mom says, “They’re already in the sauce.”

Many people are not walking in victory, yet the Bible says all the power we need is already “in us.” If we have made Him Lord and Savior of our lives, His Spirit is in us. In His Spirit are all the ingredients to make us walk and talk like Jesus. Nothing is left out.

But you may say, “It’s not working. I’m still drawn to actions and desires that are ungodly. I still crave things that are addictive. In times of trouble the peace Jesus speaks about escapes me. I love God, but the energy and passion to serve Him joyfully is not there. Serving Him is more duty than pleasure. What’s wrong?”

Our relationship is called a covenant. The blood of Jesus makes it a blood covenant. A covenant is the strongest commitment of friendship in all of history. Jesus said, "”If you love me you will keep my commandments.”

Somewhere we said “no” to what the Holy Spirit in us asked, or maybe we didn’t say “no,” we just neglected Him. Our fellowship with Him is in trouble when we break covenant by not obeying.

You can’t miss it. The Holy Spirit will keep nudging you. You know when you stopped listening to Him. Galatians 5:16 says, “Walk in the Spirit and you shall not fulfill the lusts of the flesh.” When we stop listening and obeying, His Spirit is not ruling in our life. When we obey, all His power is “in the sauce.”

There is only one choice—go back, repent, and obey. “Those who follow after the Holy Spirit find themselves doing those things that please God.” (Romans 8:5 Living Bible)

“It’s all in the sauce!” The same Spirit that leads us gives us the energy to live it. Just always say “yes” to Him.
