LITTLE CYPRESS — Citing a need for improved security and renovations to aging facilities, the LC-M school district is calling for a bond election in May.

The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Consolidated Independent School District's Board of Trustees met in a special session on Monday afternoon and voted to call for a $56 million bond election on May 11, 2013. The vote was approved 6-0.

The district is seeking an amount not to exceed $56,000,000, according to its proposition, for the purpose of constructing and equipping new school buildings on

existing school campuses and to pay for demolition of existing school buildings. The bond would also be used to make renovations and improvements to existing facilities, especially in the area of school security.

If the bond is approved by voters, every campus within the LC-M Consolidated Independent School District would see some type of renovations and improvements, while campuses such as Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School, Little Cypress Junior High, Mauriceville Middle School and Mauriceville Elementary could see major construction.

The following is the list of needs for each campus as determined by the district:

• Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School: provide a secure front entrance; renovate and equip most existing classroom areas in the main building; demolish the library building in the center of the main building and enclose the center area by constructing and equipping new classrooms and a library; demolish and replace, construct and equip a new cafeteria and kitchen; construct and equip an additional gymnasium; move the High School office areas and front of the campus to the Highway 87 side and construct and equip a new office area for the High School; connect the cosmetology building and field house to the main building.

• Little Cypress Junior High School: provide a secure front entrance; construct and equip a new building with classrooms, offices, restrooms, library, and storage and connect the two existing gyms and cafeteria to the new building; renovate and upgrade the cafeteria and kitchen and related equipment; replace gymnasium bleachers; demolish some of the existing buildings and improvements; add parking.

• Mauriceville Middle School: provide a secure front entrance; construct and equip a new gymnasium, cafeteria, kitchen, band hall and science lab; renovate areas for offices and nurse and provide new equipment for such areas; connect some of the existing buildings; add parking and driveways.

• Mauriceville Elementary School: provide a secure front entrance; demolish classroom wing; construct and equip new classrooms, cafeteria, and kitchen; renovate existing cafeteria into new classrooms and offices and equip same; connect new construction with main building and kindergarten building; expand parking.

• Little Cypress Elementary School: provide a secure front entrance; improve traffic flow and extend exterior awning.

• Little Cypress Intermediate School: provide a secure front entrance; extend exterior awning and driveway; improve traffic flow.

The last bond election proposed by LC-M CISD was in May 2008 as the district was seeking voter approval for $40 million in repairs and renovations to many of the same campuses and facilities in need of repair and renovations now. That bond election failed by a vote of 849-739.

The earliest any potential construction could start following voter approval in May would be in the spring of 2014.
