Orange County now has two options for people wanting the freshest fruits and vegetables around town.
The Orange County Farmers’ Market, along with the new Vidor-community Farmers’ Market, offer area residents plenty of freshly grown options for fruits, vegetables, eggs, sweets and more.
The Orange County Farmers’ Market returns for its twice-weekly annual run this week. The market will have a soft opening from 3 p.m. - 6 p.m., Wednesday, May 1, but is expected to be running at full speed from 7 a.m. - 10 a.m., Saturday. The Orange County Farmers’ Market is open during those hours every Wednesday and Saturday from May through November, and is located in the parking lot in front of Big Lots on MacArthur Drive in Pinehurst.
“The cold weather has really slowed things down this year, but there should be plenty to choose from,” said Jim Frasier, a local farmer and participant of the Orange County Farmers’ Market. “Wednesday will have some people there selling potatoes, eggs and preserves and some vegetables, but it should really pick up on Saturday.”
Items expected to be available this week and weekend include mustard greens, tender greens, yellow squash, potatoes, yard plants, house plants, homemade jams and jellies, local honey, fresh eggs, homemade cookies and bread and more.
Rocking R Farm and Ranch, located at 2772 State Highway 12 in Vidor, has been holding a weekly Farmers’ Market every Saturday since the middle of March.
The Vidor-community Farmers’ Market begins at 8:30 a.m., every Saturday and continues until vendors are out of merchandise.
The new event features four-to-six vendors each week and participation is expected to increase as fruits and vegetables ripen and become more readily available.
Currents items for purchase include eggs, jams and jellies, some vegetables and even some soaps made from goat’s milk.
The owners, George and Traci Rich, were out of town and unavailable for comment on Monday.
Frasier said the Orange County Farmers’ Market event has grown in popularity each year and the number of people participating has increased as well.
“We look to have a few more people participate this year too,” Frasier explained. “More people are growing their own gardens it seems, and, with the way the economy has been, a lot more people have started doing that.”
