It has been said that if you have at least one friend in your life time you’re blessed.
Do we have a clear understanding of what a friend is? Some of us operate with a daycare perspective of friendship.
Children come home from daycare and inform us that this person is their friend. Toddlers relate friendship to their feelings. As we get older our understanding of friendship should mature. Friendship is solidified on faithfulness not feelings or foolishness.
Proverbs 18:24a (NKJV) “A man who has friends must himself be friendly.” I believe the root of misunderstanding friendship lies with the fact most of us are not friendly. Being nice does not constitute being a friend. Being a friend is when you are told something in confidence you don’t have to be told not to spread it. Being a friend is covering the nakedness of someone to prevent their haters from having a field day at their expense. Being a friend is talking to someone about their issue and not making their issues the topic when talking to others. Being a friend is rejoicing when they rejoice, feeling their pain when they hurt.
Being a friend is listening when hearing the painful words that will help cultivate us. Too many of us call people friends when they are not worth being associates. We say we have friends when all we really have is foolishness. Turkeys and Eagles are both considered birds in the general scent; however one has the ability to fly but the other soars.
Eagles spend their time looking to empower themselves to elevate while turkeys spend their time gobbling. If we call a person a friend and the majority of their conversation is spreading discord, spreading the indiscretions of others we may want to check the type of friend we are portraying.
If we consider ourselves eagles and we are calling turkeys our friends we need to truly evaluate whether we entertain friends or foolishness. When turkeys and eagles are calling themselves friends, they should not get upset when one can’t come up to the others level, or if one has difficulty coming down to another’s levels.
Friendship is an action word.
It speaks of a relation that is going somewhere.
A turkey friendship will find itself being tabled; an eagle friendship will find itself sitting at the table.
Friend or foolishness what are you possessing and cultivating?
