The Orange Leader
Philip Welch is no stranger to being at high school sporting events.
Welch is now serving as the interim athletics director at Hardin-Jefferson High School after current AD David Martel announced he will soon leave the school.
Welch is the former superintendent at Orangefield Independent School District and served the district for more than 25 years.
“Part of being a superintendent is working with the athletic department,” Welch said. “I have always been interested in athletics. This is a part time job and I will be in the office three days a week. I am enjoying meeting new meet I have never met and getting to know the staff.”
One of the biggest tasks Welch is taking on is helping the Lady Hawks and Hawks basketball teams prepare for what could be a long playoff run.
Both teams are locks to make the playoffs and are now looking to find gyms and dates for possible playoff opponents.
“This is a busy time of year in sports,” Welch said. “There are a lot of sports going on and I am learning some new things. Now going to the sporting events is my job and I enjoy that.”
Welch spent a great deal of his time at Orangefield High School showing support to all athletic teams. He often ran the scoreboard during home basketball games and even drove a school bus from time to time.
He resigned from Orangefield ISD in early March 2012.
