Police are asking the public for information pertaining to the theft of copper at a local school on Monday morning.
The Pinehurst Police Department is seeking information after administrators with West Orange-Stark Elementary School, located at 2605 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive in Pinehurst, discovered the air-conditioning inside the school not operating on Monday, Sept. 9.
According to information provided by Chief Fred Hanauer III, school officials found a chain had been cut which secured air-conditioning chiller units. It was also discovered that approximately 250-feet of copper wire had been removed from two units at the school.
Due to the damage outside the building, the air-conditioning units throughout the school failed. The resulting damage to school property has been estimated at $1,045. Theft of copper wire is a State Jail Felony, which is punishable by up to two years in jail and a fine of $10,000.
Investigators report they have two people they consider to be “persons of interest” in this case but are still asking the public to come forward with any information which possibly could be related to this crime. Call the Pinehurst Police Department at 409-886-2221 with information.
