Lady Cards, Lady Stangs bring home first-place trophies

ORANGE — Both the Bridge City Lady Cardinals and the West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs walked away with a pair of tournament championship trophies over the weekend.

The Lady Cardinals dominated in fine fashion to take home the Nederland Tournament crown.

The Lady Cardinals cruised through five games defeating Santa Fe 66-37, Vidor 67-15, 21-3A rival Hamshire-Fannett 43-27, the Lumberton JV 87-17 and Jasper 63-19.

Point guard Caylin Choate was named the tournament’s MVP while Alexus Henry and Kaey Frederick were both named All-Tournament.

The Lady Mustangs stormed to the Deweyville Classic crown, defeating Anahuac 55-41 in the title tilt.

Lady Mustang Eriel Jordan was named the tourney MVP while teammate Derriashia Daugherty was named All-Tourney.

The Orangefield Bobcats took third place in the Evadale tournament behind a strong performance by All-Tourney pick Matthew Kress.

Last Thursday, the Bobcats throttled Kirbyville 61-34. Kress led the way with 22 points while Carl Wiley contributed 11.

On Friday, the Bobcats dropped a tight 54-50 decision to East Chambers. Kress led the way with 25 points while Dane Risinger ripped four three-pointers on his way to 12 points.

On Saturday, the Bobcats nailed down the third-place trophy with a 88-39 victory over host Evadale.

Kress filtered in a game-high 27 points followed closely by Carmichael Wiley’s 26 and Risinger’s 22.

The West Orange-Stark Mustangs and the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears wrapped up YMBL Tournament play in Beaumont on Saturday.

The Mustangs took down Fort Bend Hightower 45-42.

Laquarious Paige led the Mustangs with 17 points whiloe Chase Rutledge contributed 12.

LC-M fell to Lufkin 37-32 in a defensive battle. Post Blake Fuss powered the Bears with 17 points.

The Bridge City Cardinals captured the Deweyville Classic by defeating Community Christian 80-42 and West Hardin 65-34.

Boys teams will head to more tournament action this week.

Both Bridge City and Orangefield will compete in the Zavalla Tournament Thursday through Saturday.

WO-S will travel to the Nederland Tournament Thursday through Saturday while LC-M heads to the Hardin-Jefferson Tournament.

Girls teams will be busy at the Silsbee Tournament Thursday through Saturday with Bridge City, Orangefield and LC-M all competing in the tourney in Tiger Country.
