LITTLE CYPRESS —
It took a lot of work but the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears baseball team got the win against the Kelly Bulldogs Tuesday night at Don Gibbens Field.
LC-M was behind the Bulldogs until Julian Edwards finally got the Bears going in the bottom of the fourth. The Bears eventually took the lead for good and won 5-3 heading into the LC-M Gibbens Tournament.
Coby Roddy got the win on the mound for the Bears after the pitcher threw three scoreless innings of relief.
Jacob Martin gave LC-M the lead for good with a three-run home run.
Julian Edwards scored the Bears first run of the night with a single and then stealing second. Shea Richards plated Edwards with a RBI single.
Richards was not done as the speedster then stole second and third and scored on a Roddy RBI groundout to second to cut the lead to 3-2.
Martin’s blast scored both Ty Smith and Dyllon Gruber. Smith had reached on an infield single and Gruber got on base on an error.
LC-M pitchers combined to strike out 11 Bulldogs batters.
The Bears first game of their own tournament is at 3:30 Thursday against Bridge City. LC-M will also play Lumberton at 6 p.m. Thursday. Friday the Bears will face Silsbee at 3:30 and Jasper at 6 p.m.
Bridge City 9, College Station High 6
COLLEGE STATION — The Cardinals are 3-2 heading into the LC-M Tournament after a 9-6 win over College Station High on Monday at Baseball USA.
The lead changed seven times in the game and Wayne Currie and Chase Shugart teamed up on the mound to get the win and the save.
Currie threw one inning of scoreless baseball and struck out one, walked two and gave up no hits. Shugart got the final three outs for the save.
Keaton Langston, who was 2-for-4 at the plate, got the Cardinals going early with a RBI triple in the first inning that scored Hunter Uzzle. Shugart then plated Langston with a RBI groundout.
Uzzle then had a RBI double in the second.
Bridge City didn’t give up the lead after the fifth when Hayden Guidry pushed across a run on a groundout and Ashton Hunter hit a two-run single.
Uzzle and Langston both scored twice.
The two teams combined for 11 errors, the Cardinals had four.
Guidry pitched 2 1/3 innings and gave up four runs, two earned runs, five hits with one walk and one strike out. Cardinals pitchers struck out seven College Station High batters.
Nick Kennedy pitched strong for College Station High with four innings of work with four runs on three hits with seven strike outs and three walks.
Bridge City returns to the diamond Thursday at the LC-M Tournament with a 10:30 a.m. game against Jasper and at 3:30 against the LC-M Bears.
Friday Bridge City will face Lumberton at 10:30 a.m.
In other area action, the West Orange-Stark Mustangs lost 12-10 to the Kirbyville Wildcats. Kalen Garrett hit his second home run of the season in the game.
