The Orange Leader
The Vidor Pirates made the postseason three out of the last four seasons.
However, the 2013 season will see the Pirates (3-5, 1-4) on the outside looking in. But long-time head coach Jeff Mathews and the Pirates will look to build some momentum for 2014 with two District 20-4A games left on the schedule.
The Pirates will take to long trek to Livingston to face the Lions (1-6, 1-4). Both teams will check into this one a little angry after the Pirates fell to Port Neches-Groves 48-21 last week while the Lions got drubbed by Beaumont Central 64-12.
Both teams will feature run-heavy offenses.
The Pirates are powered by senior standout tailback Sage Smith, who leads all 20-4A rushers. Smith has cut loose for 1,272 yards and 17 touchdowns on 149 carries.
He’s complimented by fellow backs Jeremy Stephenson (47-355-6) and Haylon Leckelt (54-338-1).
Pirate quarterback Geth Simmons has passed for 192 yards and a TD and has rushed for three more scores. Vidor is churning out 378.1 yards a contest.
Defensively, Vidor is allowing 363.8 yards an outing after giving up 439 total yards against PN-G.
Livingston is churning out just 245.3 yards a game, 192.2 of it via the ground game.
David Caddie has 479 yards and three TDs on 96 carries. He’s joined in the backfield by the likes of Bromari Ferrell (55-404-1) and Xavier Hutchinson (94-370-6).
The Lions are giving up 303.4 yards a game but allowed Central close to 500 last week in the tough loss.
The Pirates thumped the Lions 42-21 last season.
Vidor will close out their 2013 campaign at home Nov. 8 against Orange County rival LC-M while Livingston visits PN-G.
