LITTLE CYPRESS —
There was plenty of “young” promise on the first day of the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bear Volleyball Camp.
There were close to 30 kids that were future fifth and sixth graders during the morning session of the superb camp hosted by long-time LC-M assistant Cammie Palmer.
“It’s always great to get the young ones here and teach them the fundamentals,” said Palmer. “They learn the basics of the game and gets them prepared for junior high volleyball, which is just a year or two away.”
Palmer had two former Lady Bear standouts lending a helping hand at the camp in Shelby Sanchez and Shayna Sheppard.
“It’s always great to come home and help out the kiddos,” said Sanchez, now a senior majoring in psychology at Texas A&M University.
“It doesn’t seem that long ago when I was here attending this camp and it really makes you realize how time can fly by. Coach Palmer always does a great job with the kids and I love to be around kids as they learn new things. It’s really, really enjoyable.”
Both football and volleyball season are right around the corner. As a matter of fact, the boys will be hitting the practice fields for the first time on Monday while the girls will be sweating it out in the gym.
Castino will welcome back some nice experience off last year’s squad that barely fell short of a playoff berth.
However, the long-time coach will certainly be eager to try to punch that playoff ticket with some big hitters back.
Those expected to rise up with big moments at the net include junior hitter Sarah Woods, junior Jade Piper and junior Marlazia Winbish, who each learned under the fire well as sophomores last season.
Seniors Kenzie Tanner and Josie West are back after solid junior campaigns. Seniors Kelsey Crow, Savannah Fisher, and Taylor Martin along with junior Darby Strother are all expected to contribute.
Volleyball season actually starts two weeks before school starts.
The Lady Bears open the season on the road Aug. 13 in Hamshire in a tri-match against Hamshire-Fannett and Anahuac.
LC-M will compete in three tournaments including Pearland (Aug. 15-17), Santa Fe (Aug. 29-31) and the YMBL in Beaumont (Sept. 5-7).
The Lady Bears will open up District 20-4A play Sept. 10 at Beaumont Central.
