The Orange Leader
BRIDGE CITY —
Riding the arm of senior standout hurler Cierra Roby, the Silsbee Lady Tigers mowed down the Bridge City Lady Cardinals 3-0 in a battle for first-place in the District 21-3A standings at Lady Cardinal Field Tuesday night.
Roby, who was the Most Valuable Player in District 21-3A last year, tossed a complete-game one-hitter. The Lady Cardinal hit came in the bottom of the seventh when Annalisa Bork belted a single to right.
Roby finished with 13 strikeouts as the Lady Tigers improved to a perfect 5-0 in 21-3A play.
The Lady Cardinals fell to 3-1 in district with the loss.
Kellyn Cormier pitched well for the Lady Cardinals. Cormier scattered eight hits while striking out five and walking one.
Catcher Katlyn Kerl led the Lady Tigers at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and she also scored twice and drove in a run. Kerl scored both of her runs on RBI groundouts hit by Lauren Gilbert.
Silsbee struck for a run in the top of the third inning.
Cailin Putska led things off with a single to left and went to second on a error. Putska darted home to score when Kerl slapped a RBI double that went all the way to the centerfield wall.
Roby got out of a jam in the bottom half of the fourth.
Lady Cardinal Kaleigh Carter drew a leadoff walk. Kellyn Cormier then hit a shot back towards Roby on the hill. Roby elected to try to throw out Carter at second but a errant toss sailed into the outfield as both runners were safe. With one out, Kelsey Fults drew a walk to load up the bases. Roby, however, ended the threat by fanning both Annie Borg and Baili Thibodeaux.
Silsbee tacked on a run in the top of the fifth.
Kerl got things going again with a infield single. Lottie Griffin got on off a fielder’s choice and Kerl went all the way to third on the play after a error at second. With one out, Kerl raced in to make it 2-0 after a RBI groundout by Gilbert.
The Lady Tigers added a run on three hits in the top of the seventh.
Kerl had a one-out single to left and Griffin slapped a single up the middle and Roby reached on a bunt single to load them up.
Kerl scored again off another Gilbert RBI groundout to make it 3-0.
The Lady Cardinals will look to bounce back Friday when they play host to Hamshire-Fannett.
