Big 2nd period propels Lady Cats past BC

ORANGEFIELD — Utilizing a 24-8 run in the second quarter, the Orangefield Lady Bobcats went on to fend off the Bridge City Lady Cardinals 52-44 in District 21-3A hoop action at Bobcat Gym Tuesday night.

The Lady Bobcats erased a 14-13 deficit early in the second period and finished the quarter with a 20-5 run to lead 33-18 at intermission.

The Lady Cardinals fought hard and crawled back in it, getting as close as seven points with 2:30 remaining.

The game’s decision put both teams at 1-1 in 21-3A play.

Morgan Moss powered the Orangefield arsenal, scoring a game-high 19 points to go along with five rebounds. She drained three three-point bombs.

Freshman Bailee Bacon led the Lady Cardinals with 16 points and eight rebounds.

The Lady Bobcats received 13 points, including two three-pointers from Kacey LeBlanc. Megan Burton tallied nine points and five boards while Priscilla Garza had a huge outing on the glass, hauling in a game-high 13 rebounds.

Alexus Henry scored 10 points for the Lady Cardinals, eight of them coming in the second half. Caylin Choate chimed in with nine points. Harleigh Myers contributed six points and nine rebounds while Kasey Frederick added five rebounds.

The Lady Bobcats got it going with their press in the first half and forced Bridge City into 10 of its 30 turnovers in the big second-quarter run.

Bridge City finished with a 29-27 rebounding edge.

Orangefield had 21 turnovers of their own and went 14-of-23 from the free-throw line.

The Lady Cardinals hampered themselves at the charity stripe, connecting on just 15-of-32.

Bridge City led 10-9 at the end of the first period until the Lady Bobcats erupted.

Burton scored all nine of her points in the second period to lead the run while LeBlanc had six and Moss five as Orangefield limited the Lady Cardinals to just one field goal in the quarter.

The Lady Cardinals scrapped back to within 38-31 near the end of the third with Henry scoring five points and Bacon four. However, the Lady Bobcats got buckets from both Moss and LeBlanc to carry a 42-31 lead heading to the final stanza.

Bridge City got as close as 47-40 when Choate scored on a nice drive but Moss ended any threat with a three-point missile that tickled nothing but twine.

Both teams will be nvolved in non-district action Friday as the Lady Bobcats take a long road trip to Big Sandy while the Lady Cardinals make a short trek to Nederland.
