VIDOR — Vidor now has a new girls high schoolbasketball coach in Shad Smith, who will replace Ricky Jacks.

Jacks, who coached at Vidor for three seasons, is heading to Lumberton to lead the Lady Raider program.

The Lady Pirates, who struggled for years, made the playoffs the last two seasons.

Last year, behind the splendid play of senior Blair Richmond, junior Allison Jacks and freshmen Amber Jacks, the Lady Pirates posted their best record in years, going 27-8 and advancing the area round of the postseason.

Jacks’ daughters Allison, a First Team All-District 20-4A selection, and Amber, a Second Team All-District pick, will join their father at Lumberton.

Lumberton did make the playoffs last year, taking the fourth-place playoff spot after defeating Little Cypress-Mauriceville in the last game of the regular season.

West Orange-Stark is also in search of a new head girls head basketball coach after former Lady Mustang and Baylor University standout Bonnie Perry resigned.

WO-S AD Cornel Thompson has been busy adding assistant coaches.

Former Mustang head baseball coach Stephen Westbrook has returned and will be a assistant.

Former WO-S standout receiver Jacoby Franks, who played and graduated from Texas Tech, will be a Mustang assistant as well as former LC-M standout linebacker Joseph Viator, who played for and graduated from Lamar University.

Orangefield has picked up a pair of new assistant coaches as well. John Davis left Bridge City and will now be in Orangefield. Rick Deutsch, former assistant and head basketball coach at Bridge City, left the Katy district and will be assisting in Orangefield.

Brian Waguespack, who was an assistant at Orangefield, has made the shift a few miles down the road as he will join the Bridge City staff.
