LITTLE CYPRESS — Little Cypress-Mauriceville battled first-place Nederland down to the wire at The Bear Cave Thursday night but the Bears simply had no answer for Bulldog standout Colton Weisbrod as Nederland escaped with a 48-38 District 20-4A victory.

Weisbrod scored more than half his squad’s points, finishing with 25 points and seven rebounds to power the Bulldogs (20-6, 9-1), including 17 points in the decisive second half.

The Bears (18-11, 7-3) found themselves down 38-25 heading into the fourth quarter but produced a furious rally to make the Bulldogs sweat.

Bear guard Taylor Peveto drained a three-pointer with 2:28 remaining to trim the gap to 42-36.

Fellow guard Jace Robertson scored a big bucket inside, making it a 42-38 game with 0:36 left.

The Bulldogs, however, were clutch at the end as DeAndre Frank and Tyler Toon converted four straight free throws and Weisbrod finished it off with an easy layup as the final horn sounded.

Trumaine Elmore led the LC-M attack with 12 points. Post Blake Fuss tallied 10 points and yanked down a game-high eight rebounds. Peveto and Robertson added eight points apiece.

Frank finished with seven points for the Bulldogs while Jaylan Ballou and Colton Kimler added five points apiece. Kimler also had six rebounds while Toon added hauled down five.

After leading 24-19 at intermission, Weisbrod took over the action in the third quarter that enabled the Bulldogs to go on a 14-6 run. Weisbrod torched the Bears for 11 points in the period and he tallied six more points in the fourth quarter.

Nederland led early on 14-6 but Robertson wrapped up the period with a big three-pointer for the Bears,

Fuss opened the second period with another big trey to trim the margin to 14-12. Nederland upped the lead to 21-12 but the Bears trimmed it to a five-point contest before the half thanks to a couple big baskets by Elmore.

The Bulldogs forced the Bears into 20 turnovers while only committing 11 on their end.

Both squads finished with 24 rebounds each. Nederland finished 6-of-7 from the free-throw line while the Bears made 5-of-8.
