HOOP ROUNDUP: Bears run past Cards, 81-52

BRIDGE CITY — Running their offense with precision early in the season, the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears ran past the Bridge City Cardinals 81-52 at Cardinal Gym Tuesday night.

The deep Bears (1-1) placed four players in double figures.

Jace Robertson led the balanced LC-M attack with 19 points.

Trumaine Elmore chimed in with 18 points and eight rebounds. Post Blake Fuss recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards. Taylor Peveto scored 12 points for LC-M while Justin Anderson added seven.

Byron Bacon paced the Cardinals (1-1) with 18 points, all of them coming in the first half.

BC big man Alex Bingham netted a double-double as well, scoring 16 points while snagging 10 rebounds. Point guard Bret Philpott pumped in 14 points to go along with six rebounds.

The Bears led 16-11 after the first period. The teams combined for 51 points in the second quarter as the Bears scored 29 of them to take a 45-33 lead at intermission.

Bacon scored 13 points in the second period for the Cardinals while Robertson and Peveto combined for 16 in the quarter for the Bears.

LC-M dictated play in the second half, outscoring the Cardinals 36-19 the rest of the way. Elmore poured in 14 points in the second half.

LC-M finished with a 36-26 rebounding edge. The Cardinals turned it over 19 times while the Bears had 11.

Free-throw shooting was big for the Bears as well as they connected on 16-of-18 charity shots while the Cardinals struggled, going 10-for-20.

LC-M dropped its season opener last Friday night, falling to the Port Arthur Memorial Titans in a tight 56-50 decision.

Memorial used a 23-9 run in the second period to lead 36-18 at intermission.

The Bears battled back in the second half, outscoring the Titans 32-20 but it wasn’t quite enough.

Peveto led the Bears with 14 points. Fuss and Robertson added 11 points apiece while Elmore added 10.

Alvin Malveaux and Teondre Dennis led the Titans with 11 points apiece while Deshawn Williams added 10.

The Bears return home Friday to host Beaumont Kelly while the Cardinals welcome PA Memorial to Cardinal Gym next Tuesday.

In other non-district action Tuesday night, the Nederland Bulldogs downed the West Orange-Stark Mustangs 61-55 at Mustang Gym.

BC girls 67, Nederland 27

NEDERLAND — The Bridge City Lady Cardinals ran past the Nederland Lady Bulldogs 67-27 in action at Bulldog Gym Tuesday night.

Kelsey Fults powered the Lady Cardinals (3-1) with 19 points and she had six rebounds and three steals.

Bailee Bacon contributed 12 points and five steals. Caylin Choate put together a double-double, notching 10 points to go along with 10 assists and six steals.

Alexus Henry contributed eight points while Kasey Frederick added five points, seven rebounds and three steals.

The Lady Cardinals will participate in the Tennison Memorial Tournament at Orangefield Thursday through Saturday.

Anahuac girls 49, OF 36

ORANGEFIELD — The Anahuac Lady Panthers downed the Orangefield Lady Bobcats 49-36 at Bobcat Gym Tuesday night.

Morgan Worthy led the Lady Bobcats (0-3) with 14 points and five rebounds.

Sabryn Crain had eight points and snagged seven rebounds while Maddy Ousley added five points.

The Lady Bobcats will host the Tennison Memorial Tournament this Thursday through Saturday.
