VIDOR — VIDOR — Rain was not the only thing to dampen the Vidor  Pirates’ annual homecoming festivities as they fell just short to the Central Jaguars 38-34 Friday night at Ivan Croak field in District 20-4A action.

The Pirate offense seemed to have no trouble moving the ball all night as the Pirates were lead by outstanding efforts by Sage Smith and Jeremy Stephenson. Smith picked up 147 yards mostly between the tackles on 30 carries that included five touchdowns. The speedster Stephenson amasses 176 yards on 18 carries.

Vidor falls to 3-4 overall, 1-3 in 20-4A play.

The Jaguars (4-3, 3-1) were led by Damon Thomas who collected 187 yards on the night. Sixty-four of those yards came on the first play of the second half to set the tone coming out of the locker room.

The Pirates got off to a slow start in their first series as they committed three false start penalties on their way to a three-and-out.

After the Jaguars received the ball after the punt they set up shop on the Pirates 40. It only took four plays to reached the endzone. Thomas rushed for 28 yards to put the Jaguars on the board first. The Jags then ran the swinging gate for an easy 2-point conversion.

On the ensuing drive it looked like the Pirates might have been stopped, but on a fourth and one situation Smith carried the ball 25 yards for their first score of the night. Michael Tamayo added the kick with 4:14 remaining in the first.

The Jags would respond seven plays later as Kamon Darby carved through the defense for a 25-yard touchdown. Corvera’s added the extra point with 1:52 remaining in the first.

Smith continued to be a workhorse carrying the ball five times during the drive including a one yard run for his third score of the night.

However the Jags would find the end zone again through the air  when Michael Jacquet threw a 34-yard pass to Ian Bramble. Corvera’s kick gave them a 22-14 lead.

The Pirates next drive finished on the Central 9 as the Jags defense stood tall in a fourth- and-three situation.

Thing were looking down for the Pirates until Brett Hall out jumped the receiver for a momentum swinging interception. The next play  Stephenson rushed for 64 yards to set up Sage Smith’s two-yard touchdown run that brought the Pirates back within one going into the half.

The Jaguars wasted no time coming out in the second half as Thomas picked up 64 yards and a touchdown on the first play of the half.

After the Pirates were forced to a three-and-out the Jaguars found the end zone again when Jacquet threw a 20-yard pass to Jonah Andrew with 8:58 remaining in the third quarter

The Pirates managed to stay in the game until the end. They used a 19-play drive picking up a total of five first downs meanwhile consuming 8:49 off the clock. Smith capped off the drive with three minutes left in the game to bring the Pirates within two. The Pirates went for a 2-point conversion to tie it up but the Jags forced a fumble in the backfield. D’earius Owens scooped up the fumble and carried it back all the way to give Central a 38-34 edge.

The Pirates will head to The Reservation next week to face Port Neches-Groves while the Jaguars play host to Livingston.
