Cecil Chrysler Dodge and Jeep will have a new location.
Atkission Orange, Ltd. won the bid for a .737 acre tract of land next to the current location for $150,000.
The land is currently under lease agreement between the city and Cecil Toyota for the amount of $10,200 annually.
Cecil Atkission, representative of Atkission Orange Ltd., said the acquisition of the property will allow the dealership to move forward with an expansion project.
The sale of the land is a key component to the expansion.
Director of Economic Development Jay Trahan said the sale should be considered for the purpose of economic development, which includes a business retention effort and the proposed expansion project.
“Keep in mind, you think of it as a track of land,” Atkission said during the Monday morning city council meeting. “I think about what I can do with the dealership project. I have already bought the abandoned convenience store located next door.”
Atkission said he has already spoken with a local contractor for demolition of the building and two Beaumont contractors for removing the tanks at that location. Two buildings may be built at the new location.
“This is very positive. We do not have a fondness for the current location,” Atkission said. “Many people do not realize there is a local Toyota dealership.”
The Toyota dealership is located behind the Cecil Chrysler Dodge and Jeep on Interstate 10.
Council Member At Large Position 5 Bill Mello said this also will have a taxpayer instead of a renter on the property.
The sale of the property should not have an affect on Memorial Field Park located behind the dealership.
The council proposed tax rate of .69 cents per $100 for the 2013/2014 fiscal budget, one cent less than the current rate of .70 cents per $100.
The first budget workshop meeting is scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19, in the Ira Williamson Meeting Room inside the Orange Public Library located at 220 N. Fifth Street in Orange.
