During her tenure as a student at the University of Texas, Lufkin High School alumna Carolyn Hyman paid $11.36 for her Student Athletic Season Ticket for the 1943-1944 season.  Carolyn was the daughter of local Lufkin businessman Sam Hyman, a Russian Jew.  As a student working on her Master’s in history, she worked on the original Handbook of Texas under the supervision of UT history professor Wiliiam Prescott Webb.  Should any one have any more details about the life of Carolyn Hyman, please let the author know.

Firpo Marberry from Streetman, Texas was on the 1934 Detroit Tigers baseball card.  (That year he was the teammate of Schoolboy Rowe from El Dorado, Arkansas.)  Firpo was the first cousin of Robert Marberry, the father of Rick Marberry, who played high school baseball and continued in baseball as an associate scout for the Colorado Rockies.  Rick’s and Cathy’s son, Zach, continued the baseball tradition as catcher for the Lufkin Panthers, when they went to the 2009 State Championship game (where he was the starting catcher).  He continued his career playing for Angelina College and played one year in the minor leagues for the Tampa Bay Rays.  Anyone with more details about the life of either Firpo Marberry or Schoolboy Rowe, please contact the author.
