OFJH results

The Orangefield Bobcat B Team got things off to a great start on Tuesday.  FB, Brayden Babin gave his team the early lead with a 6 yard carry on the team’s second offensive possession.  Much of the first half saw some pretty good defensive play from both clubs until Orangefield’s Avery Boyett took a pitch after a bobbled snap and ran 65 yards for a touchdown as the clock expired.  With a successful conversion the Bobcats entered the break with 14-0 lead.

The second half saw Babin reach the endzone for a second time in addition to helping to seal a 20-8 victory for the Cats with an interception late in the game.  Little Cypress found the endzone only once on the night as the Bobcat defense led by Dayne Bellard, Quade Clark, and Donovan Tohill played them tough for four quarters.  Offensively, aside from the guys that reached pay dirt, Orangefield saw tremendous efforts and leadership from Tristan Fuller at quarterback and by Jake Placette and Juan Santos up front.

The Bobcat 7th Grade A Team battled the Little Cypress Cubs in a highly competitive game that only saw two scores on the night. Favorably, for the Bobcats, they scored both touchdowns in the first half.

On the first offensive series for the Bobcats, Hunter Ashworth took a 3rd and 7 handoff off the left side for a 38 yard touchdown run to give the Bobcats an early 6-0 lead.  The Bobcats wasted no time getting back into the endzone on their second offensive drive of the game.  Halfback, Raven Dean scored on a nifty 24 yard run to push the lead to 12. The Orangefield offense would threaten once more before the half came to an end, but a red zone fumble would ruin any chances of bolstering their 12-0 lead going into intermission.

Other offensive standouts for the game were Colby Coulter and Kaine Humberson. Colby Coulter was a machine down on the offensive line, producing running lanes for his offensive backfield. Also, Kaine Humberson had multiple 3rd down conversions with some tremendous runs that showed great vision and acceleration.

The Bobcats also showed up and showed out on defense.  The Cats defensive unit only allowed the Cubs to enter the red zone once, but quickly stiffened up in what resulted in a turnover on downs.   DB’s, Kaine Humberson and Dwight Davis each recorded their first interceptions of the season to help the Bobcats pitch their second shutout in as many games.  Other defensive standouts were Evan Spears, Hayden Dwyer, and Trevor Morgan.  When the final buzzer sounded the score was just as it was at the half, 12-0, bringing the Cats to 2-0 on the season.

In the final contest of the night Orangefield’s 8th Grade team saw a first half full of turnovers, but it wasn’t just the Bobcats that had issues keeping possession of the pigskin.  Orangefield’s first drive stalled out after being backed up on a procedure penalty and they put the ball on the turf to end what looked to be a promising second drive.  After two successful stops the Cats were involved in one of the strangest series of plays in football.  Orangefield fumbled the opening play of their third drive, then Little Cypress coughed up the ball on the next play, only to see the Bobcats hand it right back on the succeeding snap.  That’s right, three straight plays– three straight turnovers.  To start the second quarter, the Cubs punched in a run on their only successful offensive drive on the night.  Chris Kyle had a nice return on the kickoff to give the Cats good field position and Gunner Jones threw two nice passes to the tight end, Jase Gipson, that moved Orangefield down to the Cub 3 yard line.  On the ensuing play from scrimmage Little Cypress batted down a toss, recovered the ball on the bounce, and went 97 yards the other way for a touchdown to make the score 12-0.  Neither team was done turning it over as both gave it away once more before the half was up.  The first half saw a between the two clubs.

Things tightened up in a second half that was characterized by long, time consuming drives.  The Cubs controlled the ball for much of the 3rd period moving the ball deep into Bobcat territory before Tyler Washington recorded his second interception of the game.  On the next possession Orangefield moved the ball methodically behind some strong running from fullback, Matthew Engle.  Tyler Jenkins had a nice reception and Gipson punched in the first score for Orangefield on a 15 yard touchdown strike from Jones.  QB, Gunner Jones was 4 for 5 on the the night with a touchdown and close to 100 yards passing.  Little Cypress recovered the onside kick attempt by the Bobcats and managed to convert some late downs to extend their drive, but with close to a minute left the Cats tackled the punter and looked to regain possession, but the Cubs were flagged for a false start and were forced to punt again.  Orangefield blocked the next punt attempt, but failed to recover the ball and the Cubs were able to retain possession and take a kneel out the clock.  The final score of the game was 12-6 moving the Bobcats to 0-2 on the season.

The Bobcats will be on the road again next week as they take on the Mauriceville Panthers.
