WINNIE — The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears overcame a first-half deficit and surged passed the Huffman-Hargrave Lady Falcons, 53-39, to win the area round Class 4A Division 1 matchup at East Chambers High School on Thursday night.

The Lady Falcons jumped out to a 13-10 lead at the end of the first quarter behind the hot hand of senior Tess Taylor, who scored six points to power the Huffman offense.

The pace slowed a bit in the second quarter as the referees began multiple fouls on the Lady Bears. Huffman continued to find baskets through the LC-M defense and extended its lead to 22-16 at halftime as Taylor scored another four points.

The Lady Bears started the third quarter with possession of the ball and made the most of it as LC-M started the quarter on a 7-2 scoring run to cut the Lady Falcons lead to one point. A moments later Keylie Washburn put LC-M ahead for good at 29-26 with a basket under the hoop and added a free throw following the foul to complete the three-point play. Washburn scored eight points in the third quarter , while teammate Amaya Meadows added six points to give LC-M a 33-29 advantage following three quarters. The Lady Bears defense kept Taylor from scoring a point in the third, which contributed to the turnaround.

The Lady Bears kept the momentum going at the start of the fourth quarter as Meadows scored another five points to extend the lead to 38-29 before Huffman found the hoop. LC-M smothered the Lady Falcons the whole quarter, while the offense slowed the pace in the latter portion of the quarter to chew up time on the game clock on the way to 53-39 victory.

Meadows finished the game with 15 points for LC-M, while Washburn added 13 points on the night. Taylor powered the Huffman offense and led all scorers in the game with 18 points.

The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Lady Bears (29-8) will move on to the regional semifinals to play the China Spring Lady Chargers (18-16), which defeated Almeta Crawford 58-57 in overtime on Thursday. The game will take place at 6 p.m., Monday, Feb. 17, at Waller High School. The winner of this game will face the winner of the matchup between Hardin-Jefferson and No. 2 state-ranked Waco La Vega.
