ORANGEFIELD — The Orangefield Lady Bobcats blew open a tight game and cruised to a 68-46 victory on Senior Night over the Buna Lady Cougars on Friday night.
The Lady Bobcats and Lady Cougars traded shots and played an extremely physical first period as Buna tried to run an up-tempo offense, while Orangefield used a press defense to keep Buna’s offense in check.
The Lady Bobcats jumped out to a 14-10 lead at the end of the first period behind the hot hand of Mikayla Locke, who tossed in seven points during the opening quarter.
Orangefield seemed to find its rhythm to start the second period as the Lady Bobcats went on a 5-0 run after both teams exchanged baskets. Addison Moore found her stride during the second and scored six points for the Lady Bobcats and helped the team score another seven consecutive points as Orangefield took a 33-20 lead at the break. Buna’s Kaleigh Humble scored five points during the second quarter and finished the night with a team-high nine points.
Buna tried to start out fast, but its offense went cold and the Lady Bobcats were red hot as they built the Orangefield lead to as much as 20 points during the period, which was mostly due to Locke dropping in 15 points during the quarter as Orangefield outscored Buna 24-6 to lead 57-26 at the end of the third.
The Lady Cougars offense finally found a spark in the fourth period as the Buna offense outscored Orangefield 20-11 in the final quarter, while tossing in 12 points from three-point range. Madison Cotton and Kelsey Burton scored five points each for the Lady Cougars during the quarter, but it was not enough as Orangefield claimed the 68-46 win in District 22-3A.
The Lady Bobcats (11-2) travel to Anahuac on Tuesday, Feb. 4 in the final district contest of the season as they await their post-season opponent from District 21-3A in the bi-district round of the playoffs, which will be held either on Monday, Feb. 10 or Tuesday, Feb. 11 with time and location still to be determined.
